10 Best Rocking Camp Chairs for 2024

I’ve been traveling the past few years with a small sand chair in my RV. But this summer I’ve decided I’m going to up my game. I’m going to get a new camp chair, but not just any camp chair. I’m going to get a rocking camp chair for relaxing evenings by the campfire.

I decided to do some research and find the best rocking camp chairs for my RV travels. They need to be comfortable, fold down small enough to fit into RV storage unit and sturdy enough to withstand the outdoor environment.

Best Rocking Camp Chairs of 2024

I drove around to all the camping stores in my area and put my butt in the chairs to test them out. I determined which were the most comfortable, but also got to see in real life how they rocked, how easy it was to get in and out of them and how small they could fold up for storage in a RV with limited space. I also culled the best online reviews because I didn’t want to leave out any good rocking chairs that might not be in stock at my local retailer.

Short on Time? Here are my top two favorites

Best Overall Rocking Camp Chair:

1. GCI Freestyle Rocker – Top Recommended Rocking Camp Chair

Based on recommendations from other campers, the GCI Freestyle Rocker is their top choice. And I can see why. It’s very comfortable and sturdy with a steel frame. It’s long-lasting and comes in a variety of colors. It supports up to 250 lbs and come with a drink holder. The rocking mechanism on this chair is spring action, rather than runners. One camper said, “In decades of camping, this is the most comfortable for us. It’s a little big for storage, but worth it. We have a Class B.”

In fact, the size seems to be the only downside to this camping rocking chair. It weighs 13 lbs and folds down to a decent size. Not small enough for my van, but a great chair!

Best Rocking Camp Chair for Space/Weight Limitations:

2. Helinox Chair One + Rocking Runners

My second choice for best rocking camp chair is for the minimalists. If you’re traveling light, don’t have much storage space or like to carry your chair down to the river to sit for a bit, the Helinox chair with its add on rocking runners is the best choice. At just over 2 lbs it can hold a weight capacity of 320 lbs.

This is a low chair, only 10 inches off the ground, and both the chair and runners come with their own bags. This is the chair I will get for travel since it packs up so small, is so strong and comfortable.

3. GCI Kickback Rocker

The GCI Kickback Rocker has a slightly lower seat and is a great option for those who want a comfortable rocker a bit closer to the ground–for those who want to put their drink on the ground next to them and have it easily accessed. The spring action makes for smooth rocking, no matter your surface. This chair folds up small (4.9 x 7.9 inches x 34.8) and comes with a carry strap for moving from place to place. It weighs just 10.6 lbs.

4. Strongback Director Rocker

The Strongback Director Rocker is a great option for those with back issues. The chair has lumbar support built in and come highly recommended by those with back issues. The chair is built from strong, light-weight materials and is easy to fold up and carry from place to place. It comes with side pockets great from stashing your phone, books, sunglasses or binoculars. The fame will support up to 300 lbs. While this is one of the more expensive chairs, it does come with a 3-year warranty.

5. Roll Your Own Way Rocker

The Roll Your Own Way Rocker from Camping World is super comfy due to the bungee webbing on the sides. The back is high and the seat is wide. Of all the chairs I sat in, this was probably the most comfortable because the bungee webbing creates an almost cushion like seating experience. The only reason I didn’t choose this chair is because it doesn’t fold down small enough to fit inside my van with it’s limited storage space.

6. GCI Pod Rocker

The GCI podrocker is the smallest of the popular GCI rocking camping chair line. The sling style seat is super comfy and folds up easily. The spring-action rocker makes for smooth motion, no matter what surface you’re on. It holds up to 250 lbs, weighs just 11 lbs 7oz and folds up into a nice little carry bag.

7. GCI Road Trip Rocker

The GCI Road Trip Rocker is another great choice. This chair sits a little higher than the Pod Rocker and weighs just a few ounces more at 12.8 lbs. It’s a more traditional design, for those who don’t want the sling style seat. Comes with a carry bag (shown below) and small beverage holder. Rocks great, even on uneven surfaces. The seat is nice size for an adult, with plenty of width. Holds up to 250 lbs.

8. Fundango Curved Rocking Chair

The Fundango chair is lightweight with a mesh back, for those warmer climates. It has a padded headrest, for when you want to lean back and look at the stars. It comes with two cup holders, so you can use one for your beverage and one for your phone. The only things that seems odd about this chair is the small mesh bag that sits between your legs. I imagine this might tickle if you’re sitting in shorts.

9. MacRocker

The MacRocker by MacSports is a great sturdy option for campfire hangouts and visiting around the campsite. The springless rockers offer more of a “glide” than a rocking motion with an anti-tip feature, so you don’t have to worry about tumbling over. At 10 lbs, it’s a little lighter than some of out other choices and supports a person up to 225 lbs. It’s super easy to open and close to move from place to place.

10. Suteck Oversized Heated Camping Chair

Are you kidding me?! A heated rocking camp chair? This thing has to be genius! I love my heated chair in my car and when I’m camping I love to be sit near the fire to stay warm. It comes with a 12 volt battery power bank that can heat on high for two hours . It’s big and comfy and super cozy on cool nights, but might be hard to fit into an RV storage space..

This chair is big! It weighs 16.8 lbs and can hold up to a 330 lb person.

Rocking Camp Chairs: FAQs

  1. What is a rocking camping chair?
A rocking camping chair is a chair that is made for outdoor use, that folds up for easy storage and transportation. Think of a typical camp chair, but with some type of rocking mechanism–whether spring action or with runners.
  2. Should I get a chair with spring action or with runners?
Each has its benefits and drawbacks. Spring actions chairs, often called gliders, take up less space and have a smoother rocking motion than chairs with runners. Gliders may also perform better on uneven terrain, such as what you would find at a campsite. They do tend to be more expensive, though.
  3. Are rocking chairs good for you?
Rocking chairs do have some benefits over traditional chairs. The movement of rocking is good for circulation and keeping your muscles toned. The act of rocking can be relaxing and calm anxiety in some people. Others find that rocking chairs feel better on their back than traditional camp chairs.
  4. Are rocking camping chairs comfortable for extended periods of sitting?
Yes, rocking chairs can be comfortable for extended periods of sitting. The slight movements that you make as you rock keeps your muscles and back from getting stiff like other kinds of sitting.
  5. Are rocking camping chairs easy to transport and store?
The chair that you choose should be easy to transport and store. Look at the space you have in your camper or RV and how heavy a piece of furniture you want to lug around. I suggest measuring the storage area in van or RV and think about how far you usually carry your chair from your campsite. If you have a lot of room and don’t tend to sit far from your van, then a bulky, heavier chair may suit your needs fine. If you have a small van and tend to like to bring your chair further from your site or attend a lot of outdoor concerts, then you might consider a lighter, more compact chair.
  6. Are rocking camping chairs safe to use on uneven terrain?
As with anything involving camping, consider safety. Be wary of sparks and flames from fire, objects that may be on the ground and cause your chair to rock unevenly. Some chairs are more stable than others and can tip over if you lean too far backwards. Be sure to monitor children and pets around rocking camping chairs.
