Birding 101 Podcast

My guest this week on the Solo Women RV podcast is Marty McCann. Marty is a birding enthusiast and came on the Solo Women RV podcast to share her knowledge about birding 101 and some great resources for learning more about birds. Birds are some of the easiest wildlife to see no matter where you are. Birding and learning about birds can be a great way to pass the time in your travels and connect with nature. Listen in!

Here are the Birding 101 Key Take-Aways:

1. When traveling look for bird or natural refuges. They can be a great place to take your binoculars out and look for birds and start to get to know what to look for.
2. Pay attention to the different characteristics of the birds you observe. What is the size? Color? Where did you see it? What is it doing?
3. Don’t just try to spot birds with your eyes. Use your ears too. And an app like Merlin can help you identify birds you can’t even see.
4. Buy the best quality of binoculars you can afford. 10 X 42 is a good magnification for beginners.
5. If you want to get a jump start on your birding education, find a local Audubon Society and they usually offer free bird walks.
6. You can learn from anyone. If you see someone with binoculars, stop and chat. Ask what they’re looking at. Most people are friendly and happy to share what they know.
7. Also consider hiring a guide for birding and nature watching. In birding hotspots, you can find local guides to show you not just birds, but all the nature in their area.
