A Military Veteran’s First Year of Solo Travel

My guest this week on the podcast is Terri Groves. When Terri was forced to leave the military after a career-ending accident, she had a lot of time to ponder what she wanted to do next. She started out traveling in her jeep with a tent and soon upgraded to a travel trailer and truck. She shares the lessons she’s learned after one full year of solo RV travel.

Show Notes

  1. You need to have good planning skills for solo travel, but you also don’t know what you’re going to encounter until you get out there.
  2. Traveling and living solo in an RV can be cheaper than living in a house, but that does depend on how you travel.
  3. Remember everyone is out here and learning, so if you get something wrong or mess up, there’s nothing to be worried or ashamed about.
  4. Anticipate that you’ll be lonely as a solo woman RVer from time to time. Set things up to prepare for it. Terri is writing a book. Think of something that you can take with you along the way to keep you busy when loneliness sets in.
  5. Sometimes you don’t know what you want until you get out there. Terri discovered she likes having both a home base and to travel.
  6. If you can find a break, like a discount on camping fees or a free night, take advantage of it. Because all the expenses add up!
  7. If money is an issue it will overshadow everything, so plan your budget and your travel around what you can afford.
